Some Qiang ini Shaanxi and Sichuan were assimilated into the Qin and Shu peoples; the majority of the Pu west of the Yue in Southeast China, mostly into the Huaxia.
During this period of flux, the Qiang, Pu, and Yue living in southwest China gradually separated from their fellows in central China due to natural barriers. They kept more of their cultural and linguistic characteristics, and under the subsequent Han and Jin dynasties, all of them were call Xinan Yi (“Tribes in Southwest China”) in historical record.
Under the Qin and Han dynasties (BC 221 - 220 AD), may new names appeared among the Xinan Yi. Generally, the areas northwest and northeast of Lake Dianchi in Yunnan, and those in the west and southwest of Sichuan were occupied by Bai, Pu and Bai Yue groups. In the west part of the areas inhabited by the Sui, Sou, and Kunming are places mentioned in Jingpo legends of folklore as the home of their ancestors."
